WHAT IS A MULTI-GENRE INQUIRY PROJECT?
Instead of producing a single, large report, a multi-genre inquiry project requires students to separate the information into multiple, smaller products which are typically called genres. For each genre, students collect facts/information as they would for any traditional report but the catch is that they must choose which information to present in each format. No information can be repeated within each student's project. This requires students to evaluate how to present specific facts in a logical and creative way.
WHY MULTI-GENRE INQUIRY PROJECTS?
WHY MULTI-GENRE INQUIRY PROJECTS?
- Students make conscious decisions about the genres that they choose
- Students explain why they chose a particular genre
- Students incorporate research findings and information in a creative way through multiple mediums
WHAT WILL YOU (DID I) LEARN?
I was first introduced to the multi-genre inquiry project in my English methods course at Wake Forest University. This class is designed to help future English teachers learn how to teach English at the secondary level. We were asked to select a piece of literature, identify and select a theme, and explore that theme through at least seven different "genres." At the time, like many of you, I was new to the concept so I chose my text, identified my theme and selected my seven genres without much thought into the future. Then, I presented for the first time at the NCTE conference in Minnesota.
I am currently student teaching and preparing for another round of presentations at NCTE. And during my brainstorming process, I realized that my view of the multi-genre inquiry project is much different than last year. This site will explain the process of assigning the multi-genre inquiry project to one of my classes and the progress between the two projects from year one to now.
